Replaced Attwood with Suburban Water Heater SAW6DEL on my 1986 Airstream Renovation Perfect fit but not the best decision
Review by Ron D Verified Buyer
Franklin, United States
The suburban Water Heater SAW6DEL duel fuel propane / electric unit is heavy since it has a steel tank, it requires a sacrificial anode that should be inspected at least annually the big problem is the warranty. The unit I received worked fine on electric but would go through 3 attempts to lite on propane and fault out. It doesn't take much to figure out if you have the igniter arcing propane present and burner is not lighting what the problem is, you do a few simple checks, gas valve, or orfice plugged, propane present the simple check reviled the valve was not opining because there was no voltage being delivered to gas valve coils, there are 2 coils on this set up and both must have voltage to allow the flow of propane. The wire from the gas valve to the controller was good so the next check was for good ground wire connection which was present, more than likely a bad control module. After doing some internet searches I found some history with mutable control module failures on a forest river blog, I contacted Suburban office and they told me they only worked with certified RV mechanics that to get a warranty repair coverage not owners, I would need to take my RV to a dealer and have them diagnose the problem and submit a claim for repair or at my cost for travel time I could have a mobile unit come to my location and make the repair.
The control module part number 521166 is a none failure, it has 2 plug in wire connections, 1 to igniter and a Muti pin connector, it will take longer to open the box and unwrap then it will to replace the control board, that module is a fine product of china. The OEM board is available from Amazon Suburban sububan store 521166 Water Heater Control Board for $64.74 2 year warranty 6.99. Choice was a $100 service call plus BS filing a claim to get reimbursed on warranty, I spent the $75 problem solved. That is why the low ratting its a shame when they no they have a problem with a simple fix. I try to buy American and promote to do so.

Good replacement heater
Review by Dusty Verified Buyer

Just what I needed. This model suburban hot water heater is the direct replacement for the Atwood aluminum horizontal tank heaters that are no longer available. This is the ONLY heater that will fit in the space as replacement, and has the wiring to control the two switches in my RV for propane use or electric. The door from the Atwood heater fits perfectly with the suburban. They shipped fast. It would have been next day at my location if UPS hadn't failed at doing their job. (Another story).
