This Dometic Penguin II 13.5K BTU 640315 Series Rooftop Air Conditioner is one of Dometic's most versatile units. You can set this unit up as a ducted or non-ducted application, with either single zone or multi-zone controls.
This model is a 'Cool Only' unit, but you can still add a heat strip kit which can be used to take a little bit of the chill out of the air on those cooler summer mornings or evenings. A heat strip kit can ONLY be added if you are setting this up as a non-ducted application and purchasing the NEWER Universal ADB (Air Distribution Box) Ceiling Assembly Part # 3314851.000.
The engineers at Dometic have taken what YOU (an actual RV-er) wants in an AC unit and have brought it to life with the all new Penguin II Series. The most sought after features that consumers voiced were that they wanted a unit that cools evenly, quickly and efficiently while still running as quietly as possible.
The Penguin II is a powerful cooling machine while remaining as a low, compact profile, sitting at only 11-1/4" tall. The sleek, contemporary shroud combined with the lower overall height helps improve aerodynamics and reduces wind resistance for when you are driving or towing your RV down any road. While that might not seem like a big deal, it most certainly is!
When you are towing your fifth wheel, travel trailer, etc. or driving your Class A or Class C and so on, you want as little wind resistance, or "drag", as possible. The bigger the vehicles and campers, the more gas consumption! And when your engine has to work harder to reach higher speeds on the highway, the smaller amount of "drag", the better!
This is especially important when you have multiple rooftop AC units or other products such as satellites and antennas that will also contribute to more wind resistance while you are driving.
Despite the Penguin II's compact and lightweight design, the robust rib-enforced base pan ensures that the Penguin II can handle tough environments for a longer service life. The custom wrap-around shroud and carbon steel base pan adds strength, protection, and durability to contribute to this lasting design.
Dometic goes the extra mile and insulates their Penguin II units with an EPP foam housing which not only provides a little bit of added protection to the interior components of the AC unit, but it also contributes to the lighter weight by not using sheet metal as insulation. The EPP foam housing supports better cooling while minimizing noise.
Larger air openings in the shroud and the base allow for improved air flow and cooling, while still running quietly. Dampening brackets are used to reduce noise and vibration.

Penguin II Installation

My son, who is a certified HVAC technician, and I installed the Penguin II in less than two hours on my Phoenix Cruiser RV. It is a little quieter than the previous Dometic Penguin that died after only five years of use. Had a little miscommunication between the Dyers customer service rep and Dometic about the thermostat compatibility. I was told that the existing thermostat would not work with the new unit so I purchased a new one. Before we installed the new one, we tried the old one and it worked with the new unit. I went ahead and replaced it anyway with the new thermostat and kept the old one for spare. The new one is a little more modern looking. The important thing is the Penguin II seems to be very efficient. Hopefully it will last longer than the first one. Overall great customer service from Dyers, other than the mixup on the thermostat.

has worked well so far only twice used. Will really test it this summer. The ducting did not line up with the pre installed ducts in 2015 Grand design 5th wheel and it was difficult to make everything work. I installed myself and have some HVAC experience so made it work, might be a challenge for some folks.

At the last minute, I discovered that my AC had died over the winter. Between the help at Dyers RV and that at Dometic, I was able to determine that the unit was a bolt-in exact replacement for the unit that had died. Because of help at both places, the order was drop-shipped in a very timely manner, and delivered to the local RV service shop, who installed it in a short afternoon. I was able to leave on my trip, almost on time.
